Types of Home & Living Supports that NDIS can Fund!

Before the participants are approved for NDIS support, they go through a planning phase with their NDIS planner. Discussing their home and living goals to help them live as independently as possible. The right NDIS-approved home can influence the quality of living for the participants. Also, NDIS Independent Living Options are highly dependent on the following factors.

  • How close the participant would like to live to their friends or family?
  • Are there any accessible transport or work options nearby?
  • The type of community they would like to live in?
  • Where can their children go to school?
  • Access to activities, public spaces and services

NDIS Independent Living Options

NDIS main aim is to promote independent living with increased social and community participation. After all, home and living options should be equal and accessible to all.

NDIS Independent Living Options

There is a range of home and living support services by NDIS-approved providers:

  • Supported Independent Living
  • Specialist Disability Accommodation
  • Individualised Living Options
  • Short Term Accommodation
  • Medium Term Accommodation
  • Long Term Accommodation (that does not exceed more than 90 days)

Are you looking to explore NDIS Housing or living arrangement options? Our Care Assure specialists team has broken down the support options to help you understand better and choose the right option for yourself.

1. Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Supported Independent Living, also commonly known as SIL is a home and living support option designed for NDIS participants to maximise their independence with assistance. This also includes engaging in activities and programs that help them easily achieve their life and career goals.

A SIL accommodation may look like sharing housing with other participants while also engaging in activities with assistance, such as cooking, shopping, money management, exploring hobbies and interests, and participating in outdoor activities.

2. Specialist Disability Accommodation

Also, commonly known as SDA, is also a home and living option for NDIS participants with high or extreme functional impairment needs. Usually, SDA involves sharing a home with a small number of individuals (who are also on an NDIS plan). The SDA funding includes the cost of an individual's building, home, or unit. However, participants may still be required to pay rent or other personal costs.

3. Individualised Living Option

Individual Living Option (ILO) is also a home and living option for participants looking to either live alone or co-residency. Moreover, you can also explore different ways to live with family, friends or host. Additionally, you can also design a support package, helping you the way you choose to live.

4. NDIS Short-Term Accommodation

The National Disability Insurance Scheme provides a temporary support option for NDIS participants who need to live out of their homes for a short period. Also, for participants who are waiting to move into their new home. You may have a short stay by yourself or share it with other NDIS participants.

What supports does STA include?

Your STA support may include the following:

  • Accommodation
  • Personal care
  • Food
  • Any activities that you and your NDIS provider may have agreed upon

5. Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)

This is an option If a participant cannot move to their permanent home, due to technology modifications or other reasons. The MTA is also a home and living option, usually funded for up to 90 days. However, funding for MTA does not include day-to-day living costs like food, electricity or internet. All the other supports, such as personal care, may be funded separately.

Please note that MTA is not an emergency housing or short-term accommodation. Other mainstream supports can provide general housing and other support options.

"NDIS may fund your accommodation for more than 90 days if a participant provides evidence that they may need it for a longer period"

6. Long-Term Accommodation

Most of the time, long-term accommodation means staying a place for a year or more. Also, providers that offer long-term housing are familiar with the standards for accessibility and the different needs of an individual with a disability. If long-term housing isn't available yet, you can choose medium-term housing until then.

Care Assure is dedicated to giving participants the best care and help possible. Our focus on personalised care and attention to detail has made us the short-term and long-term housing provider in Australia that is growing the fastest. We're proud of our team of skilled and devoted professionals who do everything they can to give our members the best care and support possible.

Supports NDIS can Fund

The NDIS may fund the following types of support for participants:

  • Daily activities support
  • Getting around so people can take part in social, economic, community, and daily life tasks
  • Help in the workplace to help a person get or keep a job in the open or supported labour market
  • Therapeutic help like behavioural support
  • Help with housework so the individual can keep their home in good shape
  • A subject with skilled staff who can evaluate, set up, and train them on aids or equipment
  • Designing and modifying homes
  • Equipment for movement

Supports NDIS Doesn’t Fund

The NDIS Act, and the rules made under it also say which kinds of support the NDIS will not fund. The NDIS can't pay for a service that:

  • Is of a different government agency or community group
  • Has nothing to do with a person's disability
  • Has to do with costs of daily living that aren't linked to a participant's support needs, or
  • Is likely to hurt the person or put other people in danger

Conclusion

People will need different kinds of home and living assistance. Supported independent living is just one type of help that is available. There may be other homes and places that are better for your wants and tastes. Apply for any of the NDIS housing options and ensure you go for the one that suits your needs.
