What is Improved Life Choices?
Improved Life Choices is one of the nine sub-categories that falls under the Capacity Building. funding category. This particular funding item is available to assist participants in managing their NDIS plan, their budget and learning to make better life choices so they can lead a happier, more independent life.
It is designed to help participants utilise the available supports to their fullest and alleviate the stress associated with the planning, budgeting and administration that comes with managing an NDIS plan. With this kind of guidance, participants have more time to focus on what is most importantㅡchoosing and receiving the right support available to them so they can achieve their goals.What type of support is covered by Improved Life Choices?
Improved Life Choices NDIS support can be delivered in two different ways:
Planning and Plan Management
The first way to utilise Improved Life Choices is through Plan Management. This option supports you in the overall management of your plan and the various tasks, skills and challenges associated with it:
- Build your ability to manage your supports
- Develop your financial and organisational skills
- Learn how to select the right providers for you and your needs
- Learn to develop service agreements and pay your providers
- Develop your ability to create monthly statements and claim payments from the NDIA
- Build your communication skills to better lias with providers
- Learn how to make the most of available supports
Financial Intermediary
The alternative way to utilise NDIS Improved Life Choices is through Financial Intermediary. This option involves having a Plan Manager take care of all the administration and plan management tasks on your behalf.
- They will organise payments to your providers
- Assist you in keeping track of your NDIS funds, spending and budget
- Manage all NDIS financial reporting requirements
- Support you in making the most of your NDIS plan
How to get Improved Life Choices in your NDIS plan
If you wish to utilise plan management support or use a financial intermediary (i.e. a Plan Manager), simply ask your LAC or Support Coordinator in your planning meeting or annual plan review to include Improved Life Choices in your NDIS plan.

If self-managing your NDIS plan is something you are interested in doing, then speak to your LAC or NDIA planner about the next steps to setting that up. It is also good to talk to someone you know who has experience in self-managing their NDIS plan or connecting with a self-management peer support group for extra guidance.
Plan managers help NDIS participants monitor their funds, stay on top of budgets, manage invoices and provide financial reporting to the NDIA. They are available to answer questions and guide participants in anything related to the financial aspect of the NDIS.
