Robust SDA Housing
Robust is an NDIS Specialist Disability Accommodation design category built for resilience and safety, for participants who need a secure, hard-wearing home. Care Assure provides Robust SDA homes across South Australia and Tasmania.

What is Robust SDA?
Robust is one of four Specialist Disability Accommodation design categories set by the NDIS. It is built for participants who need a resilient, secure home, including those whose disability may lead to behaviours that put themselves, others, or the property at risk.
The purpose of a Robust home is safety without an institution. The design reduces risk and withstands heavy wear, while still feeling like a home rather than a facility. Features are durable and discreet, so the resident has a secure environment that supports their independence rather than restricting it.
Robust is one of the four categories explained on our Specialist Disability Accommodation hub. The category funded in your NDIS plan determines which homes you can move into.
What Features Do Robust SDA Homes Have?
Robust homes are built to strict NDIS requirements focused on durability, safety, and reducing the risk of harm. These are the features that define the category.
- Reinforced walls and fittings: Impact-resistant materials that withstand heavy wear and reduce the risk of damage or injury.
- Secure, laminated windows and doors: Tough glazing and secure fittings that hold up to force while allowing normal daily use.
- Safe layouts and sight lines: Room arrangements that let support workers see and reach residents, reducing escalation and risk.
- Reduced ligature and hazard points: Fittings chosen and placed to lower the risk of self-harm and injury.
- Sound attenuation: Noise reduction between rooms, which supports residents who are sensitive to sound and reduces conflict.
- Secure outdoor space: A safe, enclosed area where residents can spend time outside without risk.
- Resilient services: Plumbing, electrical, and fittings built to keep working under heavy use.
Every Care Assure Robust home is enrolled with the NDIS as Robust and built or modified to meet these requirements, while still feeling like a genuine home.

Who is Robust SDA For?
Robust is funded for participants who need a secure, resilient environment. It is likely to be the right category for you if the points below describe your situation.
- You need a home built to reduce the risk of harm to yourself, others, or the property.
- Your disability may lead to behaviours of concern that a standard home cannot safely accommodate.
- You benefit from a low-stimulus, secure environment with safe sight lines.
- You need durable fittings that withstand heavy wear.
- Standard or other SDA categories cannot safely meet your needs.
Robust must be the design category named in your NDIS plan. If you are unsure which category you are funded for, or your needs have changed, our team can help you understand your options before you apply.

How Robust Differs from the Other SDA Design Categories
There are four SDA design categories. Robust is built around safety and resilience, which sets it apart from the physical-support focus of the others. The category funded in your plan reflects your specific assessed needs.
| Design Category | Built For | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Robust | Complex behaviours, need for a secure home | Reinforced, resilient, impact-resistant |
| High Physical Support | Extreme functional impairment, specialist equipment | Hoists, backup power, automation |
| Fully Accessible | Significant physical impairment | Wheelchair accessible throughout |
| Improved Liveability | Sensory or cognitive needs | Better lighting, sight lines, and orientation |
How Support Works in a Robust Home
SDA funds the home itself, including all the Robust safety and resilience features. It does not fund the support workers who assist you inside it, which are funded separately.
Daily support in a Robust home is funded through Supported Independent Living or your Core Supports budget. Robust residents often benefit from support workers trained in positive behaviour support, with Care Assure providing registered nurse oversight of care plans.

How to Apply for Fully Accessible SDA
Moving into a Fully Accessible home takes four steps, from confirming your funding to moving in. Care Assure guides you through each stage and can support your NDIS evidence.

Check that your NDIS plan names Fully Accessible as your design category. It has specific criteria and evidence requirements.

Call (08) 7071 9276, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm. Tell us your location and support needs. We confirm the current Fully Accessible availability.

Arrange a visit with your family or support coordinator. Test the access in person and check the fit before deciding.

Once you accept a home, we coordinate your move and arrange your daily support as part of your SDA tenancy.
