Supported Independent Living (SIL) Providers in Adelaide
SIL, or Supported Independent Living, is NDIS-funded support that pays for the workers who help you live as independently as possible in your own home or a shared residence.

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS-funded support that covers the cost of workers who help you live day-to-day in a shared home or your own residence. It does not pay for the house or the rent it pays for the people who support you.
The NDIA funds SIL under the Core Supports budget. It covers daily assistance, personal care, skill development, and any overnight or active night support you need. SIL is reviewed as part of your regular NDIS planning cycle, usually every 12 months.
SIL is not a fixed arrangement. Support levels range from a few hours a week for participants who are mostly independent, up to 24-hour active support for participants with complex medical or behavioural needs. Your funding amount reflects the support intensity that was assessed for you.
Who is SIL For - Eligibility Criteria
SIL is available to NDIS participants who need daily living support and want to live with greater independence outside of a family home or institutional setting.
You may be eligible if:
- Your NDIS plan includes Core Supports funding
- You need regular or daily support with personal care, medication, meals, or household tasks
- You are moving out of the family home, hospital, or another care arrangement
- You are transitioning from residential care to community living
- You want to build daily living skills with a goal of greater independence over time
From 2025, the NDIS Commission made registration mandatory for all SIL providers. This means you can only receive SIL supports from a registered provider. Care Assure holds current NDIS registration. If your current provider is not registered, contact us to discuss your options.
A support coordinator or NDIS planner can help you determine whether SIL is right for your situation. Care Assure can connect you with a coordinator in SA or TAS if you do not already have one.

What SIL Support Includes at Care Assure
SIL covers the cost of workers who assist with the tasks of daily life. What support looks like in practice depends on your goals and the intensity level in your NDIS plan.
At Care Assure, SIL supports include:
- Personal care showering, dressing, grooming
- Meal preparation and nutrition support
- Medical administration including BGL monitoring and epilepsy management
- Household tasks and home management
- Grocery shopping and budget support
- Community access and social participation
- Support with complex behaviours from trained staff
- Overnight and active night support
- Travel and transport assistance
Our registered nurse writes and oversees each resident's care plan, which is updated when your needs change. Not all SIL providers offer registered nurse oversight as a standard part of their service. This is something we deliberately pursue because it produces better outcomes for participants with complex needs.

Our SIL Housing Vacancies
Care Assure maintains an up-to-date list of available SIL housing across our SA and TAS locations. Vacancies are listed on our properties page with details of each home, including bed count, accessibility features, and current availability.
SIL Accommodation and Housing Options
SIL accommodation refers to the homes where SIL-funded participants live. These are not the same as Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), even though both can operate from the same property. SIL pays for the workers; SDA pays for the home itself.

Care Assure operates 11 SIL homes across South Australia and Tasmania, with individual bedrooms, shared living areas, and accessibility modifications. We also deliver support in Care Casa SDA housing for participants who hold SDA funding.
Types of SIL housing arrangements we offer:
- Shared SIL homes: 2 to 4 participants living together with rostered support workers
- Individual SIL in your own home: SIL funding used with support workers coming to you
- SIL with SDA: SIL with SDA: Available in Care Casa SDA housing for participants who hold both SIL and SDA funding
- Short Term Accommodation (STA): Respite stays that include SIL-type support
Use our properties page to view current SIL vacancies, or contact our team to discuss which arrangement suits your situation.
SIL vs SDA vs ILO - What's the Difference?
These three NDIS support types are often confused. Here is a clear summary:
| Support Type | What It Funds | Who It Is For | Funded Under |
|---|---|---|---|
| SIL | Support workers who help you live day-to-day | Participants needing daily living assistance | Core Supports |
| SDA | The specialist home itself was built or modified for disability | Participants with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs | Capital Supports |
| ILO | Flexible support arrangements in any home you choose | Participants who want more control over how and where they live | Core Supports |
SIL and SDA can be combined if your NDIS plan includes both funding types. Where a participant holds both, Care Assure delivers the SIL support and our partner Care Casa provides the SDA home. Most SIL participants do not have SDA funding and live in standard homes with support workers funded through SIL. A support coordinator can help you understand which applies to your plan.
ILO is a newer arrangement for participants who prefer to live in a regular home rather than a purpose-built property. Care Assure offers ILO arrangements in some locations.
How to Get SIL Funding in 2026
Getting SIL into your NDIS plan involves several steps. The process from initial request to funding approval typically takes 2 to 4 months.
Talk to your NDIS planner or support coordinator
Tell them you need daily living support and want to explore SIL as an option. Bring documentation of your current support needs.
Complete a SIL
assessment
The NDIA uses this to calculate your support funding level. It often involves your current support team, an occupational therapist, and sometimes a behaviour support practitioner.
Choose a registered
SIL provider
From 2025, your provider must be NDIS-registered. Care Assure is registered across SA and TAS and can discuss your needs before your plan is finalised.
Find suitable SIL
accommodation
Once funding is confirmed, your support coordinator and provider work together to find a home that matches your needs and preferences.
Move in and start
your care plan
Care Assure's registered nurse prepares your individual care plan before you move in. We introduce you to your support team and coordinate with any prior providers to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- What is supported independent living?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS funding that pays for the support workers who help you live day-to-day in your own home or a shared residence. The NDIA defines SIL as support or supervision with daily tasks to help you live as independently as possible. SIL does not cover your rent or the home itself.
- What are the do's and don'ts of SIL providers?
A registered SIL provider must follow the NDIS Practice Standards and Code of Conduct. They must maintain a qualified nurse or practitioner to oversee care plans, report incidents to the NDIS Commission, and give participants genuine choice and control. They cannot charge for services not delivered, restrict your freedom, or prevent you from switching providers.
- What is the difference between SIL and SDA?
SIL funds the workers who support you. SDA funds the specialist home itself. You can hold both SIL and SDA funding, but they cover different things. Not everyone who receives SIL needs SDA. SDA is only for participants with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs as determined by the NDIA.
- What are the levels of SIL funding?
The NDIS funds SIL based on your assessed support intensity. The three levels are standard, active, and high intensity. High-intensity SIL covers participants who need skilled or specialist support, including those with complex medical needs or concerning behaviours. Your level is determined through a SIL assessment during your NDIS planning process.
- How do I get SIL funding?
Speak to your NDIS planner or support coordinator and request SIL support. You will likely need a SIL assessment and supporting documentation of your daily living needs. The process from request to funding approval typically takes 2 to 4 months. Care Assure can assist you throughout this process.
- Can a child receive SIL in Adelaide?
SIL is generally available to NDIS participants aged 18 and over. Children and young people under 18 may be eligible for different NDIS accommodation and support arrangements. Speak with your NDIS planner about options for younger participants in the Adelaide area.
- Can I choose my SIL provider?
Yes. The NDIS gives participants the right to choose and change their provider. You can switch SIL providers if you are unhappy with your current service. The process involves giving appropriate notice to both providers and updating your NDIS plan. Care Assure can assist with provider transitions.
- What should I consider when choosing a SIL provider?
Look for a provider that is NDIS-registered, has experience supporting people with needs similar to yours, operates in your preferred location, employs qualified staff with registered nurse oversight, and can show you how they support participants to achieve their goals. Ask about staff ratios, care plan processes, incident reporting, and what happens when your needs change.
- Can SIL services be adjusted?
Yes. SIL supports are reviewed as part of your NDIS plan cycle, typically every 12 months. If your needs change significantly between reviews, you or your support coordinator can request an unscheduled review. Care Assure monitors participant progress and can support plan review requests when your situation changes.
- How can a support coordinator help with SIL?
A support coordinator can assist you through the SIL application process, help you complete required documentation, compare providers, find suitable properties, and coordinate your transition into SIL. Care Assure works closely with support coordinators across SA and TAS.
- Where are Care Assure SIL houses located?
Care Assure operates SIL homes in Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Mount Barker, Port Augusta, Whyalla, and Hobart. Visit our properties page to see current vacancies and details about each home.
- Are Care Assure staff trained for complex support needs?
Yes. Support workers at Care Assure receive training in behaviour support, medication management, and specialist care areas. All homes have care plans developed by our registered nurse. Staff working with participants who have complex needs receive additional specific training before commencing support.
- Do you provide other NDIS services?
Yes. Care Assure provides Supported Independent Living, respite through Short Term and Medium Term Accommodation, in-home care, community participation, complex care and hospital discharge support. SDA housing is provided by our partner Care Casa, with Care Assure delivering the support inside. Contact our team for a full list of services available in your area.
