High Physical Support (HPS) SDA Housing
High Physical Support is the highest specification SDA design category, for participants who need significant physical assistance and specialist equipment built into the home. Care Assure provides High Physical Support SDA homes across South Australia and Tasmania.

What is High Physical Support (HPS) SDA?
High Physical Support is one of four Specialist Disability Accommodation design categories set by the NDIS, and it is the highest specification of the four. It is funded for participants with extreme functional impairment who need significant help with everyday activities and rely on specialist equipment.
An HPS home is not a standard house with a few modifications. The physical support features are built into the structure of the home: the hoists, the power supply, the doorways, and the space to move equipment are designed in from the start because retrofitting them later is difficult and often impossible.
High Physical Support is one of the four categories explained on our Specialist Disability Accommodation hub. The category funded in your NDIS plan determines which homes you can move into.
What Features Do High Physical Support Homes Have?
HPS homes are built to strict NDIS requirements. These are the features that define the category and that participants funded for HPS should expect in their home.
- Ceiling hoists: Fitted through bedrooms, bathrooms, and living areas for safe transfers without manual handling.
- Backup power: An emergency power solution for participants who rely on life-sustaining equipment such as ventilators.
- Structural reinforcement: Walls and ceilings engineered to carry hoists, grab rails, and assistive equipment safely.
- Wider doorways and circulation space: Room to move a powered wheelchair through the whole home.
- Assistive technology provision: Wiring and structural allowance for the technology HPS participants use daily.
- Household automation: Automated doors, windows, and environmental controls that support independence.
- Fully accessible bathrooms: Roll-in showers, height-adjustable fittings, and space for support workers to assist.
Every Care Assure HPS home is enrolled with the NDIS as High Physical Support and built or modified to meet these requirements.

Who is High Physical Support SDA For?
HPS is funded for a small group of participants with the highest physical support needs. It is likely to be the right category for you if the points below describe your situation.
- You have extreme functional impairment and need significant help with daily activities.
- You use a powered wheelchair and require hoist transfers.
- You rely on equipment that needs reliable backup power, such as a ventilator.
- You need assistive technology and automation built into your home.
- Standard or other SDA categories cannot safely meet your physical support needs.
HPS must be the design category named in your NDIS plan. If you are unsure which category you are funded for, or you believe your needs have changed, our team can help you understand your options before you apply.

How High Physical Support Differs from the Other SDA Design Categories
There are four SDA design categories. HPS is the highest specification, but it is not automatically the right one. The category funded in your plan reflects your specific assessed needs.
| Design Category | Built For | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|
| High Physical Support | Extreme functional impairment, specialist equipment | Hoists, backup power, automation |
| Robust | Complex behaviours, need for a secure home | Reinforced, resilient, impact-resistant |
| Fully Accessible | Significant physical impairment | Wheelchair accessible throughout |
| Improved Liveability | Sensory or cognitive needs | Better lighting, sight lines, orientation |
How Support Works in a HPS Home
SDA funds the home itself, including all the High Physical Support features. It does not fund the support workers who assist you inside it, which are funded separately.
Daily support in an HPS home is funded through Supported Independent Living or your Core Supports budget. For participants with the clinical needs common in HPS homes, Care Assure also delivers complex care and high intensity supports such as ventilation and enteral feeding, with registered nurse oversight.

How to Apply for Fully Accessible SDA
Moving into a Fully Accessible home takes four steps, from confirming your funding to moving in. Care Assure guides you through each stage and can support your NDIS evidence.

Check that your NDIS plan names High Physical Support as your design category. HPS has strict criteria and specific evidence requirements.
